Do they have direct Construction Knowledge and Experience of working in the construction industry at an appropriate level?  We do….. Do they have appropriate Professional Health and Safety Qualifications such as a NEBOSH Diploma (or NVQ Level 6 or above)?  We do….. Do they have appropriate Construction Related Qualifications (Degree level or above)?  We do….. Do they have Chartered Membership of Professional Construction Institutions?  We do….. If your Safety Advisors cannot demonstrate compliance with these 5 simple requirements, then how can you be sure they’re competent? Your Construction Health and Safety Advisor should be able to demonstrate compliance with each of the above as a minimum requirement, but unfortunately many simply do not.  We’ve encountered everyone from Hotel Receptionists to Retail Staff to Production Workers and others, most of whom have never actually worked in the construction industry, but suddenly claim to be experts.  Worse still they’ll often be poorly qualified having completed short IOSH or NEBOSH introductory courses, which to those outside of the Health and Safety industry may look impressive, but in reality hold very little worth.  Hence anyone using NEBOSH or IOSH after their names, really are not qualified.  You should be looking for the ‘protected’ post nominals such as CMIOSH, indicating that they are a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, which our consultants all hold. It really is a case of complete your due diligence, you’ll know if you’ve completed an SSIP Accreditation for CHAS; SMAS or SafeContractor etc that they will want evidence that you’ve assessed your sub-contractors competence, but at present, few checks are ever made on the competence of your Health and Safety Advisors, but that is changing, so don’t get caught out.
